Cross-correlation analysis of multiple fibre optic hydrophones for water pipeline leakage detection

Leakage detection plays a significant role in water pipeline since leakage problems severely affect urban supply safety. The fibre optic hydrophone derives from hydroacoustic sensing technology and exhibits superior performance to traditional electric hydrophones. To investigate of the proposed system, tests were conducted on overhead buried pipelines, respectively. Two types spherical valves adopted for simulating with different sizes. Effects surrounding medium acoustic wave positioning accuracy studied. signal was acquired by analyser analysed self-developed program. A revised cross-correlation analysis multi-signals compared that two signals; it presented better time delay estimation. With leakage, pipelines showed larger amplitudes than amplitude increased opening degree valves. results reveal affected velocity could attenuate wave. multiple hydrophones increase positioning. system feasible detect both pipelines.
